Towards a Responsible Development of the Metaverse

In June 2024, we participated in the International Legal Congress “Towards a Responsible Development of the Metaverse,” organized by the Metaverse Chair at the University of Alicante (Spain) on June 13-14, 2024.

The purpose of the congress was to bring together international experts from various disciplines to discuss current issues directly related to the development of the Metaverse, such as intellectual property, personal data protection, contract law, content moderation, and cybersecurity. The discussions focused on assessing whether the existing legal framework provides adequate protection to all citizens as well as legal certainty to entrepreneurs in the Metaverse, allowing for optimal use of the potential offered by this new virtual environment.

The congress consisted of six panels, with presentations by scholars who had worked with the Chair during its first year. The panels covered the following topics:

1. **Metaverse Governance**
2. **Legal Status of Avatars and Digital Identity in the Metaverse**
3. **Privacy and Personal Data Protection in the Metaverse**
4. **Content and Conduct Moderation in the Metaverse**
5. **Virtual Worlds as Markets**
6. **Cybersecurity in the Metaverse**

It was an inspiring event that enabled the exchange of knowledge and joint reflection on the future of legal aspects of the Metaverse, considering the responsible and sustainable development of this technology.
