WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) is a set of international guidelines for websites and web applications. It focuses on ensuring that content is perceivable, understandable, operable, and compatible with assistive technologies. It is WCAG that specifically defines requirements for contrast, keyboard navigation, and accessible labels, among others.
EN 301 549, on the other hand, is a European technical standard that covers much more than just the web—it also applies to software, mobile apps, payment terminals, e-books, and even electronic hardware. In practice, it incorporates WCAG as one of its chapters but adds requirements for other digital technologies.
Thanks to the EAA (European Accessibility Act), EN 301 549 has become the legal basis applicable to the private sector in Poland and throughout the EU. When developing digital products, it is worth being familiar with both standards.
