What are accessibility overlays?

We invite you to read our article on the legal aspects of accessibility overlays—JavaScript-based tools used as a “quick fix” to bypass underlying website inaccessibility. While the use of overlays offers some advantages, it also carries significant drawbacks, including various legal risks.

The market is currently dominated by companies promising “instant compliance” with WCAG, ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), and EAA (European Accessibility Act) at a fraction of the cost of a traditional audit and manual code remediation. However, as noted by leading expert organizations such as the European Disability Forum (EDF) and The A11Y Project, overlays that fail to ensure the website itself meets specific criteria are not a proper solution. The best practice remains addressing accessibility issues at their source—directly within the website’s code and design.
